Working Mom Series

INTERVIEW 1: DARIA WILBOURN

Field: CUSTOMER SERVICE/MENTAL HEALTH

Status: SINGLE MOM

Hobbies/Interests: Horticulture/crocheting/psychology

MiMi: What are some of the challenges you have faced as a single working mom?

Daria: First, not having enough time to spend with my children, second, living from paycheck to paycheck unable to save enough money.

MiMi: How have you been able to meet those challenges?

Daria: Taking tips from others, teaching myself to budget the money I do make. My first child grew up in learning centers and daycare, then school. My second child…it’s been better, as I do get assistance from his father, which made me available for him, as I didn’t work steadily until he was school age.

MiMi: Were there ever moments Darius felt he wanted you home more? If so, how was he able to adjust?

Daria: Yes, he always complained about me going to work, as the job I worked had hours like 11:00 a.m to 8:00 p.m. At one time he literally cried, saying i should quit that job and never work outside the home. It was really bad, I felt so guilty all the time. Eventually he calmed himself and tried to understand that mom had to work to pay bills. Recently, I lost my job, and it honestly opened a way for me to work from home, and my son is in cyber school, so we’re living the life he and I always wanted, accept we don’t have our Alaskan Husky yet!

MiMi: When you spend time with your son, what are some of the things you like to do together?

Daria: Watch his favorite t.v shows or videos of biblical days, watching him build spaceships and the like…with Legos. He loves to show me his wrestling moves as he makes them up.

MiMi: What advice would offer to women who may have difficulties adjusting to working outside the home and raising kids?

Daria: If it’s your goal to work at home, make plans to do just that. You won’t regret it. You could take a certificate course in billing and coding…or something like that, where you could work from home. Teach your kids the bible, it makes a great difference in their demeanor and outlook on life. When you are at home with the children, listen to them. They will show you how to teach them. Play…

MiMi: I want to personally thank you for being so willing to be apart of my Working Mom Series!

Daria: You are welcome, and thank you for inviting me to be apart of your series.
