NAME: CHRISTINA WILLIS
JOB TITLE: RN/BLOGGER/CONTENT CREATOR & DIGITAL DESIGNER
HOBBIES/INTERESTS: DIY/HOME DECOR/READING/COOKING
MiMi: How many children do you have? What are their names and ages?
Christina:2 children, a girl, and a boy, Savanah is 3 yrs old and Jesiah is 2 yrs old.
MiMi: Do you feel the roles of women have changed in regard to work and family over the years?
Christina: Absolutely! Women have always set the tone of the household, in my opinion, as this was the case for my family growing up. Nowadays, women are working two, three, or even four jobs to make their family life work. There are many reasons why the role of the woman has changed over the years but this goes to show the resilience of women in today’s society.
MiMi: What are some of the challenges you have faced as a working mom? How have you managed to cope?
Christina: I face so many challenges. I work as a nurse and my shifts are long & challenging. I also work rotating shifts (day & night) which leave me feeling very tired and with limited sleep. I also pick up extra shifts as a casual RN at another hospital whenever necessary, but I try to be smart with how many extra shifts I pick up as my children do miss me when I’m away. I also found that I was not dedicating enough time to self-care at moments, which I’ve gotten better at. I also find it a bit challenging, finding scheduled time for my blog & content creation but things will be changing a bit with my blog as this summer, I plan to launch my Pinterest consulting & strategy business that I’m very passionate about.
MiMi: When you find the time, what activities do you like to engage in as a family?
Christina: We love playing games, going to the park, or family outings together. Sometimes, simple activities are what give us the best experience!
MiMi: What does mealtime look like for your household?
Christina: Oh man! Some days, I don’t even know what to make as I usually default to the same things my family loves. We are a Jamaican household so there’s always lots of rice & peas (a Sunday staple), stewed chicken, fried plantains, steamed fish & vegetables, and curries. On Saturday, we always make soup – which is my favorite meal!
MiMi: If you had 1 piece of advice to give a mother who finds it a challenge to balance career and family, what would it be?
Christina: To please, not be too hard on herself. I feel that we Moms try to do it all, and it’s nearly impossible. We are doing an amazing job & need to have more grace in ourselves. As long as our children are happy, healthy & thriving, we are doing a fantastic job.
MiMi: Thank you for being apart of my Working Moms Series, and hats off to all you moms who work and take care of family!
