ART/TRAVEL/SPENDING TIME WITH FAMILY
MiMi: How many children do you have? What are their names and ages?
Tammy: I have 3 children. (Names undisclosed) 2 girls and 1 boy. My eldest daughter is 12. My middle daughter is 8, and my youngest son is almost 5.
MiMi: What are some of the struggles you face as a working mom? How have you been able to cope with some of these challenges?
Tammy: It’s a constant challenge to find the right balance between working or achieving your own goals and being a mom. I’ve been through a lot of changes since my first daughter was born… before I had her, I worked in a demanding high tech job, that involved a lot of traveling; and I knew that I would leave after she was born. It was kind of a no-brainer. I wasn’t really happy where I was working, which made the choice much easier. I know many women who work in similar fields because they enjoy their jobs, but then struggle to balance their career with their home. After my daughter was born, I did a multitude of things…sometimes as a freelancer with the flexibility of working from home and sometimes in an office, but relatively recently, I finally came to the conclusion that working in an office is not for me. My children are getting older and less demanding, however; I still like the freedom of working in my own space and the flexibility of being able to be there for them if they need me.
A year ago, I started a blog, that I am focusing most of my energy on at the moment. It’s called “One Day” and it’s about a day in the life of women around the world. It actually focuses on just this subject…how much we get done in a day and how much we have on our shoulders every single day. I think it’s important to pay homage to all the women who do so much every day.
For me personally, I realized that there is no formula… and what works for a certain amount of time may not always work, therefore; it’s important to re-evaluate once in a while in terms of both personal goals, work goals, and home goals, and adjust where necessary. Try and maintain some balance and not lose yourself along the way.
MiMi: Do you feel the roles of women have changed over the years? How so?
Tammy: This is a subject that is really close to my heart. I am studying for a second degree in gender at the moment and I am always interested in analyzing our current situation. Our roles have definitely changed, we have a lot more choices today then we did in the past (thanks to all the amazing feminists who fought so we could have the rights we do today!) The world is definitely changing, but in very small steps. I still think, that as women; we face a lot of discrimination and unique challenges even in our supposedly progressive world (at least in some societies, because oppression is still sadly way too common) As for those of us who want to achieve our life goals and pursue a career…every day involves hundreds of small choices that revolve around finding the balance between work and home, unfortunately; most of the task related to the personal sphere still fall on women.
MiMi: What activities do you like to engage in with your family when you find the time?
Tammy: We love to travel, hike and, bowl. We sometimes go to a movie, meet with other families and go to the pool in the summer. We also like to play games or do puzzles when we are at home.
MiMi: Thank you so much Tammy for being apart of my Working Mom Series!
Tammy: Thank you for the opportunity! I interview women for my blog and feature a different woman each week! It is really nice to be on the other side of the questions for a change! I would also like to add that we all have a voice to make a positive difference in the world even if it feels small at the moment, it all adds up!
