Interview 12

MiMi: How many children do you have? What are their names and ages?

Jamie: 1 three year old boy, named Malachi

MiMi: What challenges do you face as a mom who works outside the home and takes care of family?

Jamie: My biggest challenge as a working, single mom is: finding balance between needing to provide for my child and feeling guilty about not being able to spend a lot of time with him. I’m constantly trying to find balance between being present with him and making time to work on my entrepreneurial endeavors.

MiMi: How have you been able to cope with these challenges?

Jamie: I’ve come to terms with the fact that I don’t have the ability to stay home with him all day, however; If I continue to put in the work, I can achieve that goal. If I do start to feel guilty, I take a second to meditate and put things back into perspective. If all else fails I always pray.

MiMi: What are some of the activities you like to engage in with your child when you find the time?

Jamie: Mal and I have weekly movie dates every Tuesday. We love reading, going to the park, museums, and pretty much any activity that’s interactive and, or educational. I love watching him experience things for the first time, food, smells, sights, etc. I love it all!

MiMi:If you had 1 piece of advice to give a working mom on coping with the challenges of raising children and working outside the home, what would it be?

Jamie: Be kind to yourself. You’re doing an amazing job and there is no better mamas for your little(s) than you! When you start feeling guilty, discouraged, or down, just remember 3 things. (1) God has your back and he chooses you to be the mama to your little(s) because you’re perfect for the job. (2) Fill your own cup without feeling guilty. (3) Your children love you unconditionally. They may not always like you but they will always love you no matter what!

MiMi: Thank you for being a part of my Working Mom Series!

Jamie: Overall, I just want to encourage all the working mamas to keep pushing. Whether you are single, or in a relationship, because we’ve got the most taxing job there is! On call 24/7 FOR LIFE, plus all the long nights and early mornings, it gets hard. Take care of yourselves first, even though society says you shouldn’t. Fill yourself with joy so you have more than enough to overflow to your little(s). Forgive yourself when you fail because you will undoubtedly will. Above all else, pray; because only Jesus and wine can get you through this journey!
